Frame Modifications

The Starting Point

This is a 1977 Honda CB550F, and this is the a picture of original bike. When I purchased the bike, it was not running. It had a rats nest in the exhaust, and lots of rust.

As I tried to get it running, it just opened up more issues that I was not knowledged in. I spent a great deal of time going down the rabbit hole, and I’ll try to share as much of what learned. It’s at the point where I’ve pretty much rebuilt or restored each bolt and part on the bike.

Current State of the frame

Removed multiple tabs for a more streamlined and cleaner look. Added a custom frame hoop with an integrated LED rear light. I also added new rear sets to position the feet farther back, and I’ve fabricated an electronics tray to replace the stock bulky airbox. I’ve also upgraded all the electronics to modern creature comforts like keyless start, LEDs, and bluetooth so the bike’s status can be sent to my cell phone. There’s a lot more left to do.

Custom Hoop Frame

I wasn’t happy with the frame hoops you could buy, because it was a circular bend and I needed more of an oval shape. Getting a flush fit was a bit of extra work, but worth the effort.

Other Frame Modification

One of the first steps was to remove all the tabs holding the electrical components from 1977. There are many advancements to electrical solutions you can buy which reduce the overall space electronics take up. Here are some snapshots of tab removals, stripping the gas tank, and fabricating an electronics tray that fits flush to the frame.
